Howgill Fells, Weasdale and Green Bell.. Wed 02 Nov 2005 |

The weather forecast for the day was bad; rain, wind etc. So the walk I'd intended doing will have to wait and I decided on one from Weasdale. The place is just a few houses and is just off the A685 east of Tebay. The narrow lane had no walls so parking was easy and there was actually a sort of lay-bye, meaning I didn't have to mess up the grass with tyre tracks. Before the end of the road was a gate. Through it was the old building of Cow Bank, which was in the process of restoration. Over the door was a stone block inscribed 'David & Angela Jackson 2003'. The road ended here and I walked up the fell heading south towards Hooksey. After the first steep rise I joined and old track-way, which had been well engineered but vanished near the summit. Following on I joined another track that had been better used and was easy to follow all the way to the summit of the ridge near Leathgill Bridge. The weather wasn't anything like as bad as forecast. The cloud was low but hadn't obscured my route and the rain was little more than windblown drizzle. The path then followed and interesting swoop down then up again to Randygill Top. |

Here there was a substantial pile of large stones and looking to the NE Green Bell was visible with the cloud just starting to clip the summit and it's trig point. Considering the substantial overnight rain the going was surprisingly free of boggy ground. The path across Spengill Head was indistinct at first then improved into almost cart-track status on the final approach to Green Bell. |
As I left the summit the cloud level dropped and as I looked behind I couldn't see where I'd come from. The main path headed north but wasn't very interesting so I left it and walked across open fell to Turn End. The scenery was far more interesting so I continued my descent to Little Swindale where I picked up another track, which I followed back to the road and my car. |
