Little Mell Fell, Gowbarrow Fell, Cumbria. Fri 21 Apr 2006 |
|
| The weather looked promising as I drove to Dockray, above Ullswater. But when I arrived the haze was so thick I couldn’t even see any of the hills. A weak sun was trying to break through but wasn’t succeeding. The daffodils were out where I parked my car by the bridge so I took a few photos. Passing the Hollins I walked down to Riddings beck and followed the nice green lane along the north side of Riddings Plantation. |

At Ulcat Row I came to the made road which I followd to a tee junction A left and right took me to Lowthwaite where I left the road and followed an unmade track by a derelict and partially ruined farm. Before long I took a direct line up the steep fell to the summit of Little Mell Fell. The visibility was still bad and I could only just see the surroundings through the haze. Unfortunately it wasn’t heat haze. |
| I descended to the caravan park at Mellfell House and follwed the road a short way to the footpath along by Priest’s Crag. By now the sun had managed to break through and it was very pleasant to walk in warm sunshine for a change. The path had a few ups and downs but generally followed the contour. At Gowbarrow park I came to the ruined shooting lodge and followed a path uphill towards Gowbarrow Fell where I eventually emerged on the summit by the Ordnance Survey Trig point. |

| It was still warm and sunny so I decided to stop for lunch. I hadn’t seen anybody all day but soon a small party of walkers turned. I soon left and followed various paths down to the bridge where I’d originally crossed Riddings Beck. | |
