Wasdale Head, Lingmell, Scafell Pike, Corridor Route, Cumbria. Wed 07 June 2006 |

High pressure was hanging over the country, making for a promising day. I’d had a good drive up and arrived on the green at Wasdale Head at 8:10am. A couple of cars were already there when I arrived but I feel sure more would be arriving soon. My first objective was Lingmell, a mountain I’d never climbed before. Just south of the green is a wonderful green path across a field then a footbridge over the almost dry Lingmell Beck. A diagonal path upwards took me to the SW ridge of the mountain and also gave me some new a fantastic views of Wastwater. It was a steady plod up a nice green path and the sunny morning made for pleasant walking. |

The first part of the ridge is easy but quite steep but as the gradient reduced and a sort of summit appeared ahead I knew it was a false one. I had to cross a fairly flat area before the path steepened and wound its way to Goat Crags. I reached a wall and this ran all the way to Lingmell Col. I continued straight on to the summit of Lingmell and the large cairn |

The temperature had warmed up to 22deg C and a bit of haze had come in as well. Never mind, the views were still very good. It was impressive looking down the sheer east face into Piers Gill. I’d still not met anyone on my walk but I could see across to Scafell Pike and a crowd of people standing on the summit cairn. I descended to the col and followed the path up to Scafell Pike summit. |

Many people were coming down and a lesser number climbing up. I continued over and sat for a while looking across to Sca Fell, Mickledore and Broad Stand. A couple of walkers had just had a look at Broad Stand and then sat down at its base. They were still there when I left the summit to descend to the col by Broad Crag. This is where I started my descent of the mountain. It was a bit loose and gravely at first but soon improved as I reached the Corridor Route and my lunch stop. I continued down towards Sty Head but before reaching it took a minor path to the descent route on the south side of Great Gable. On the way down I met a man coming up. We chatted for a while and he said he was using a small digital camera to record images for paintings he would do later on. That sounded like a very good use for the artist. |
|
Much further down and almost at the car park I came to another man taking pictures. This time at the other end of the spectrum. He had a large tripod set up with a 5*4 MPP camera on it. And to view and focus his pictures he had to put a large black sheet over himself and camera. The camera was probably about 50 years old and still worked perfectly. I doubt my digital camera will be working in 50 years time! |
