Return to Whittle Wanderer

Late morning packed camping gear in rucksack. Early aft Steve gave me a lift to White Coppice where he dropped me off at the cricket field and I then walked up the Gorge and turned right to Grain Pole Hill and on to Hurst Hill. I pitched my tent on the same site as the one I used 2 years ago. It was the first time I’d used the Aztec Summit 1 tent which is advertised as being good in bad weather situations. I certainly had them while I was pitching the tent as the high wind suddenly had driving rain to accompany it and the easier system of fitting the pol
es helped. Unfortunately there are a lot of guy lines which whipped about a lot in the wind and soon wrapped themselves up in knots. A lot of pegs were also needed. However, when it was up it performed very well.

Out of the tent just after midnight to watch the distant firework displays. It was still windy but a little less than earlier in the evening. As I would need to make long exposures of a least 10seconds to take photos my tripod wasn’t steady enough because of the wind. The only option was to try and rest the camera on the rocks making the nearby cairn. The difficulty was getting a secure position pointing in the right direction. It wasn’t very successful but I did manage to get a few acceptable exposures. After about 20mins I returned to the tent and my comfy sleeping bag for the rest of the night. In the morning I waited for daylight before setting off just after 8am. It was overcast but the wind had dropped and it had a pleasant walk home.
