There was low thick cloud when I set off just after 6am. I passed Ardvorlich House and the estate buildings and continued up the track to the south. The weather forecast was good so I hoped the cloud would be low and I’d eventually get above it. The vehicle track continued to a wooden bridge by an intake for the hydroelectric generating project.

Just above the clouds

The second summit of Ben Vorlich
After that the track was just for walkers and soon started to deteriorate. I was still in thick cloud with no views. When I reached 700m the cloud began to thin and I could see above it and Ben Vorlich ahead in clear sunshine. I took my time on the final part of the climb and appreciated the views over the top of the sea of cloud. The summit trig post was ahead and when I reached it I had a wonderful view of the east cairn along the summit ridge.
Looking back to Ben Vorlich
I then set off for Stuc Chroin to the SW but had a long descent to the saddle which was partly in cloud. The climb of Stuc Chroin is not straightforward as route has to be found through the large boulder field at the base. The climb then becomes very steep and some scrambling. The last time I was here it was thick cloud so I couldn’t see the drop below. I was relieved to be on the flat summit ridge and back in sunshine and an easy walk to summit cairn. I was in no rush so wandered around to look at another couple of cairns. I was still in clear sunshine with thinning cloud below. The descent is easy at first but then there is a well-worn steep trick descent down to the valley below. Although the path is then mostly level there is a lot of wet ground to cross and many short detours. The route follows the contour to eventually meet the ascent path I’d used earlier. The cloud had mostly cleared but was now hazy. As I descended I met a few people coming up.

Memorial stone

Just before reaching the car I inspected the memorial stone by the bridge. The text was mostly illegible but it didn’t take long to do an internet search later to find out what it said.
'Near this spot were interred the bodies of 7 Mcdonalds of Glencoe killed when attempting to harry Ardvorlich Anno Domini 1620'.
