During my misty morning drive north on the M6 I could see a thin
layer of snow on the fields over Shap. The temperature was just
on zero. I reached the parking area at Legburthwaite near
Thirlmere and had to re-thinks my planned route. My plan was to
climb Fisher's Wife's Gill to try and find a safer way up than
the last time. With snow & ice on the slopes it would have been
too dangerous. I set off walking north along the road and
decided to ascend the fell via the Fornside Farm route that I
used a few weeks ago. |

I reached the farm access track and the fellside looked quite
nice with a dusting of snow. The path up was a bit slippery in
places but certainly not as bad as Fisher's Wife's Gill would
have been. It was a steady climb up the well engineered path
that seems to be mostly ignored by walkers. As the gradient
eased I reached the old ruined sheepfold where I stopped to
admire the view and eat my sandwiches. |

The distant Skiddaw was in sunshine but I was still in the
chilly shade. I walked up to Calfhow Pike where the temperature
was -7degC. The continuing walk up to Great Doddle was rather a
slog in the snow covered trail. There was a solo walker up ahead
and part of the way I followed their tracks. Continuing to
Watson's Dodd I took the lower trail that avoids the summit
cairn. |

The other walker headed that way so got ahead over Stybarrow
Dodd. It was now getting a bit hazy but the views were still
good. Descending to Sticks Pass to start my descent back to
Legburthwaitew but now had to be extremely careful on the
descent due to snow & ice. |
