I had a nice dark drive north along the M6 under a full Moon. I
was the first to arrive in the car park above Threlkeld and as I
got ready a few dog walkers came bye. I followed the muddy path
up north by Blease Gill then crossed over the beck after the
gate to continue my climb to the east of the valley. The sky was
mostly clear at first but soon high clouds rolled in. |

The climb was steady and easy up the grassy ridge then
higher up I turned right to follow a narrower and level path
into the head of the gill. It crossed a couple of slate screes
where I had to be extra careful on the icy stones. Hopping over
the small tributary I started a steep climb across difficult &
mixed ground of heather and loose scree that was partly frozen.
As the valley became narrow it was easier grass underfoot but
still a steep climb. |

At the top of the valley I reached the Gategill Fell ridge
and a good path heading north. I followed it to the main
Blencathra ridge path where there were several walkers out and a
cold north wind blasting into my face. The ground was now
covered with frost so again extra care needed. The descent was
to the SE and lower down the path was frost free making the
going much easier. It was nice to reach the green track heading
east and an easy walk back to my car. |
