After visiting the old Steam Crane on the Bolton Bury canal on
Thu 17th Apr 2025 I thought it would be interesting to re-visit
a similar crane in Jumbles Quarry. I drove to the parking area
at Cross of Greet Bridge in spring sunshine and set off across
the reeds to find the line of the old narrow gauge railway that
connected the quarry with the Stocks Reservoir works 4.5 miles
away. The mark on the landscape can be seen with occasional bits
of rail and wooden sleepers showing through the grass. |

In less than a km I reached the Far Costy Clough stream and
crossed where the narrow gauge rails can still be seen. The
steam crane was soon visible ahead and I enjoyed photographing
it along with some drone photos. The last time I was here was 15
years ago with Roy Davies in Mar 2010. |

Then it was possible to read the A759 crane number in the
casting but today I couldn’t see it. After eating my butties I
decided to head up the steep hillside to investigate an old
shooting hut that can be seen from the road. The building is
located at the head of cold well spring and is now just a sheep
shelter. The track from it back down to the road is a well
surfaced easy gradient. |
