A very wet and very
windy night. I was woken a few times by thunder and heavy rain
bashing on the tent. The cloud was very thick even for this low
altitude so I decided to stay put for a while and possibly catch the
later bus to Ulverston and the train home. Then out of nowhere there
was sunshine on the tent. The cloud was clearing and I had views
again. Time would be tight to catch the first bus but I thought I’d
give it a go. With the tent packed I set off down the ridge and
following the narrow path. Some sections were quite rocky and not to
be rushed. I thought I was making good time when suddenly the path
stopped and I was looking down a sheer rock face to grass a long way
down. There was no way down so I had to retrace my steps and climb
carefully down the steep side to the reservoir access road. The
chance of catching the first bus had now gone so I took my time and
enjoyed the pleasant sunny walk into Coniston. I stopped at the
grocers for a bite to eat then sat on the bench near the bus stop to
finish my book and wait for the bus. The small bus arrived and I
caught it to Ulverston then a short wait for the Manchester train
which dropped me off in Chorley. I was home by early afternoon.
