Some rain overnight and the wind had increased. I was surprised to
see the temperature had dropped to 3degC and its mid June. A
temperature I would expect in December. Last night I could see
across Beinn Choin and the summit of Ben Lomond lost in cloud. Now
the cloud was lower and no sign of Ben Lomond. With an uncertain
weather forecast and strengthening wind I decided to move camp to a
lower level. I packed up and set off for the summit of Meall Mor a
short distance to the NE. With so many minor summits around it was
difficult to judge which was the main summit. There was no trig post
and I couldn’t see a substantial cairn. The strong wind made walking
difficult at times and I wasn’t too bothered about finding the 747m
summit. The map shows a loch to the east below Stob an Duibhe. The
landscape is lumpy and complex making efficient rout finding
difficult. Lots of detours have to be made to make progress.
Eventually I saw the loch across a wide valley of boggy ground. I
decided it was too exposed to the strong easterly wind to a good
campsite so started to descend the valley own towards Loch Katrine.
There was a good water supply from the river and several good
sheltered camping spots as I descended but there was no mobile phone
signal anywhere. The drizzly rain continued so I descended to an
altitude of 400m where there was a nice view of the dark and
overcast loch and put the tent up. It was only early afternoon and
normally too early to camp but I wanted to take advantage of a pitch
with a good view and not descend to the Loch side where I’d not see
much.
