Morning view of the Forth Railway Bridge from my tent

Wed and Thu there was hardly any wind making cycling fairly easy. During the night the wind was quite strong and a couple of the tent pegs pulled out. I wasn’t able to get them far into the ground when pitching as the ground was frozen solid. As I packed the tent away the ground had was less frozen and the pegs came out easily.

Firth of Forth

I had a good view of the bridges in the dark as they were well illuminated. I wheeled my bike back up to the track and set off in the dull light.

Dalmeny House

I soon reached the main Dalmeny House which looked very impressive, even in the low light. It dates from 1817 and is a very spectacular looking building.

The track continued to a very muddy farm track then on to the public roads at Cramond Bridge over the river Almond. I was fairly close to Edinburgh Airport and many planes were flying low overhead either coming in to land or take off.

Cramond Bridge

The road continued through housing estates then along a narrow path to emerge near the line of the old railway. The cycle route runs along this railway for about 3 miles before emerging near Haymarkey Railway Station.

Cycle track to Edinburgh

My route then took me a couple of miles through the roads of Edinburgh to reach Princess Street and then down to Waverley Railway Station. I got there at 09:50 and wheeled my bike inside to buy a ticket. I was luck with the timing as I was able to catch the 10:08am Manchester Airport train which took me to Preston. The single senior ticket was £25.70.
