Overnight camp on Iona and mid-morning caught ferry to Fionnphort.
Drove east along Mull and round to Tiroran and along a rough track
to a car park. The weather was changeable with rain on the way. We
set off heading along a rough track to the west to see how far we
could go.
Coffin cairns
It soon started raining but it didn’t last long and got as far as
the location of the ruined township of Salacry. On the way passed
four coffin cairns.
Salacry ruin
Each cairn represents one generation of the MacGillivray family.
They would rest a coffin here on the way to the graveyard. The
cairns have been reconstructed by Natural Trust for Scotland
volunteers. Reached the ruins and had sandwiches in the pouring rain
then walked back in the dry.
