This was my last night and the only one that was rain free but the wind had got up quite a bit by morning. I only had a couple of miles to walk to the bus stop in Threlkeld so didn’t need to be away too soon. I set off at 7:15 to head off uphill for a while. I was looking for the diagonal path which crosses Red Screes and goes down into Threlkeld Knotts. I found one going the right way but it seemed narrower than I remembered it. It was a fairly straightforward descent but it wasn’t till I’d reached the bottom that I realised the main path was higher up. An old track leads down Wanthwaite Bank so I followed it.

Sunrise from the tent

Half way down the farmer and another worker were coming up on a quad bike. The track was narrow and cut into the hillside so I stepped to one side to let them through. There is a wall and high stile at Hilltop Quarries. I didn’t cross it but turned right to follow a grassy path down to the old coach road. Here I turned left and followed it down to the point where the old quarry railway line used to go through. I stopped to take a couple of pictures before continuing down to the B5322 road. I turned right and followed it to the Threlkeld Quarry entrance where I sat on a boulder for a short rest.

Horse and Farrier Inn Threlkeld

Not cyclist friendly

There had been no footpath on the road so I’d had to dodge the oncoming traffic. At least the short stretch to Threlkeld now had a narrow path. Crossing the main A66 road there is a narrow gated road which leads into Threlkeld and the old road. People were about waiting for the Keswick bus when I arrived. I turned right and walked to the bus stop after the Salutation Inn. There was a bench to sit on and nicely mown grass all around. Across the road seemed to be a rubbish bin where I could get rid of the rubbish I’d been carrying since High Raise. It turned out to be for dog muck only and not general rubbish. A man was walking by with a bag and stick picking up rubbish. He said there wasn’t a rubbish bin anywhere in the village as they encouraged people to leave all sorts of inappropriate stuff. They wanted people to take their litter home. The 10:31 bus arrived on time and in Penrith I did a bit of shopping before catching the 11:47am train
