It was very windy in the night but
before light I looked out to see stars. In the morning it was clear
with low cloud. This was my last day. I packed the tent up in windy
-3degC weather. The pole sections had frozen together so it took
quite a while to thaw them by holding the joints in my gloved hand. |

The sun reaches the tent. |

Memorial on Great Carrs |
I crossed to Great
Carrs and stopped to look at the memorial to the 8 crew members of
the Halifax Bomber which crashed here on 22 Oct 1944. I continued to
climb up to Swirl Howe then wandered along the flat section towards
Coniston Old Man. At Levers Hawse I inadvertently took the right
path towards Goat Crag and used it to shelter from the wind for a
while. |

Coniston Water in the distance. |
|
I regained the ridge and continued to
Coniston Old man summit to stop a while and take in the view. I took
the main stoned path down to Low Water but had to be extra careful
because of ice patches. |

On the summit of Coniston Old Man. |
I stayed with the
path down to Church Beck and the mine area. Over the stone bridge I
followed the road back in to Coniston. After a brief look outside
the Ruskin Museum I returned to my car but before I got there I
stopped to chat to and local old man who was interested in my walk
and talked briefly about his time on an Antarctic base on South
Georgia many years ago. It was so nice to put my stuff in the car
and drive home and not have to wait for busses and trains. |
