The night was calm but the mist was still hanging around as I set off along the main path by Winder. Approaching Arant haw I got some brief views across to Sickers Fell but the cloud soon came in again. I continued over Calders and on to The Calf where I stopped briefly. I was still in thick cloud and no prospects of it clearing soon. I was heading for Fell Head Scar so set off on the faint path north-west.

The grey morning clears a bit

Trig point on The Calf

The path to Bush How, my next objective, is fairly indistinct and I made the mistake of continuing along the main path down White Fell. If I’d paid more attention to my compass bearing I wouldn’t have made the mistake but by the time I realised I’d descended quite a way. I had to climb back up the fell to join the correct path. At Breaks Head I came across a large snow bank which I though would make a good water supply. My original intention was to camp on a flat spot Below Fell Head Scar but as there was little wind and a good pitch up here I decided to camp on a good spot on the edge of Crooked Ashmere Gills. I scooped some snow into a bin liner and so had a plentiful water supply. Fortunately I had a good gas supply to melt it.
