A very calm night but still no views. The cloud was just about at tent level as I packed it away just before 7 am. I needed my headtorch to do the packing but by the time I set of walking there was just enough light to see. The path is good to Fell Head Scar but the main route seems to tempt the unwary walker down to Whin’s End. A compass is essential and mine kept me on the correct NW bearing towards Knowles.

First hazy view of the M6 motorway and Railway

By now I had a reasonable view ahead even though it was quite hazy. Over Knowles the descent to Carlingill Bridge is revealed and the noise of the distant Motorway begins to get louder. I joined the Fairmile Road at Gibbet Hill. Both are wonderful names that must have some historical significance but I doubt I’ll ever find out what it is. At Carlingill Bridge there is an old boundary stone with very faded markings which are too far gone to be legible. The modern map shows the beck as a Yorkshire Dales boundary but it must have been an earlier boundary. It was easy and pleasant walking along the road to Low Borrowbridge. At Salterwath Bridge I stopped to check out the River Lune which passes beneath. I wasn’t sure where to try and catch the bus to Kendal.

I knew there were bus stops in Tebay 2 miles away but the bus would come right past the road end a short distance away. I asked a woman out walking her dog if there was a bus stop there. She said there wasn’t so I pressed on. At the A685 I turned left (south) to the lay-bye and viewpoint hoping that if I stuck my arm out the bus would stop. It was due around 9:50am. When it arrived I stuck my arm out and it looked like it wasn’t going to stop. He pulled up at the last minute quite a way ahead. I got off in Kendal near the railway station and caught the 11:03am Manchester Airport train which took me directly back to Chorley
