My original plan was to move camp
today and head for a pitch I’d used before on the west side of Cross
Fell. The view from the tent and the weather forecast were both bad.
Rain and snow is forecast for all day and it would take many hours
to get to the pitch. I decided it wasn’t worth it and staying put
would make much more sense. By mid afternoon I had to go out to top
up the water bag. It was difficult standing up straight in the wind
and I was buffeted by the wind all the way to the small river at the
old reservoir outlet. I repeatedly dipped the pan in but only a
portion of the water I poured reached the bag. The rest was whipped
away in a horizontal spray. The temperature was hovering around zero
C and the cold damp air soon made my fingers painful then start to
loose feelings. Once back in the tent all was well and I descended
into my sleeping bag to resume reading. |
