This is my last day and first thing the wind was so fierce I could hardly hear my radio, even using headphones. I was in no rush but as the wind and snow seemed to get worse I decided it was time to leave. It took a long time packing up as it always does when in difficult conditions. It was coming up to mid day when I set off heading roughly north. Packing my tent away had meant taking my gloves off and it took ages to get any sense of feeling back into my fingers. I had my magnetic compass tucked in my jacket but was too occupied to use it as keeping upright in the strong wind and deep snowfields took all my concentration. Judging a direction in mist and snow is always difficult but I knew that I only had to follow the contour to join the main path down from Little Dun Fell. I pressed on and eventually saw fence posts through the mist. I was almost right with my navigation but had reached Crowdundle Beck a little lower than the summit where the main path runs. Fortunately the river is in its infant stage and was easy to cross.

It was a full blizzard outside and packing
the tent away was very difficult.

By following the contour again I was able to reach the main path down to Wildboar Scar. The path was mostly covered in snow and only one set of boot prints were visible. They were probably mine from Tuesday. I was surprised how strong the wind was and even when I’d descended all the way to Wythwaite at 220m altitude it was still incredibly strong. The farm access track was awash with water and nothing like when I’d walked this way on Tuesday. I was glad to reach the car and change into dry clothes.
