This is my last day and as I don’t have a long walk back to the car I decided to spend some of the morning reading in the tent. By late morning I was on my way down the fell to the old wooden shooting hut at the valley bottom.

the track on the way to the large barn

I followed the new road a short way before hopping over Stockdale beck to join the old track running along the valley bottom on the north side of Croglin Water. In the distance I saw a lone walker heading up the valley, the first person I’d seen on this trip.

We stopped to chat for a while then continued in our opposite directions. Instead of following the official footpath I stayed on the track up to a substantial barn and on to investigate some old mine headings. I saw two entrances and surrounding spoil heaps. Their old access track soon took me up to the main track accessing the fell.

This was my way off the fell so I continued down and past Town Head Farm. Once on the road I continued back to the car.
