Heading home on my evening walk I was treated to this sunset seen from Whins Lane, Wheelton.
Fri 29 Mar 2013
Evening walked to the Red Lion pub Lower Wheelton to see the band Starfish. A technically good band but the room they played in was small and the amp & speakers were far too loud making their sound distorted. A shame because I think they’d sound fantastic doing just an acoustic song.

Taken on my morning walk. It shows the almost full moon (that was yesterday) setting in the west.

I was cycling over from Belmont to Rivington when I came across several cars still buried in the snow almost a week after they were first stranded.
Being on a bike I didn’t have a problem as I was able to carry my bike over the snowdrifts.
Sun 24 Mar 2013
Tyson House, Top o'th' Lane, Brindle. The rest of Denham Lane wasn't quite as deep, but not far off.
While out for a cycle ride this afternoon and saw some interesting snow scenes which were completely out of character for late March. This is the recently painted milestone on the A674 near Ollerton.
Sat 23 Mar 2013
I was cycling from Loughborough to Buxton (55 miles) through horrible snow conditions. I stopped briefly in Matlock to take this picture to remind me of winter in spring.
Thu 21 Mar 2013
I was approaching Castle Acre, Norfolk, from the south along a narrow country lane. I though I’d taken a wrong turn when I saw the wide river ahead but it turned out to be a ford with wooden footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists.

Somerset House, Whittle-le-Woods used to be a shop serving the barge travellers when the canal was in use. I’ve left the colour balance unaltered on this evening photograph.

Some time during the last few weeks the milestone plate by Gorse Close on the old Blackburn Road has been stolen. I'd always thought that because its base was partly embedded in pavement tarmac it would be safe. I'd underestimated the thieves.

Where the milestone plate used to be.

Tue 12 Mar 2013

I was fortunate to have cold clear weather for a walk near Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria. I had a look around Isel St Michael's Parish Church which dates back to c1150 and built on a pre-Norman site. Unfortunately it was locked. I would have loved to look inside.
Sun 10 Mar 2013

The evenings are getting lighter but the lights were still on as I approached Navigation House on Town Lane

Fri 08 Mar 2013

This morning I was driving home from a couple of days walking in Scotland and made a short detour to visit Moffat and Wallace Bros Butchers so I could buy one of their excellent steak pies.

BBC TV North West News
Thu 07 Mar 2013 evening news at 18:30
After carrying out filming around the site of the Clayton/Leyland Reservoir last Fri 1 March 2013 the edited film was shown on tonight's BBC TV North West Tonight. The item was short but covered all the main points very well. It showed the important heritage that the reservoir represents and how the local residents and the pupils of Manor Road would like to see it preserved in some way.

On this morning's climb of Lochnagar I was soon in whiteout snow conditions. This is the large boulder I used to get a bit of shelter while fitting crampons to my boots.

By the A93 on the Braemar Road. Scotland are the Glenshee ski slopes. By the road is this statue of Alfred Wainwright and his wife Betty. The snowploughs have driven straight through Betty and left her lying like the result of a road accident.
Tue 05 Mar 2013

Saw a lovely moonset on my morning walk. When I got home took a photo with my telephoto lens using the rubbish bin to steady the camera.

Sat 02 Mar 2013

It was a nice sunny morning so went out for a cycle ride via Samlesbury, Mellor, Great Harwood and Blackburn. I checked out the Mercer Memorial in Great Harwood, then the birthplace of Alfred Wainwright on Audley Range. Nearby was PK Foods at 239 Audley Range, Blackburn so I called in to buy some fresh chillies.

John Mercer (1791 - 1866)

The Mercer Memorial Clock Tower in Great Harwood.
Erected in 1903 in memory of John Mercer (1791 - 1866)
In 1844 he developed a process for treating cotton, mercerisation, that improves many of its qualities for use in fabrics by increasing the ability of the fabric to absorb dye.
Mercer was also fascinated with the new concept of photography, and worked long and hard at achieving colour photography. He never achieved full colour, but at a meeting of the British Association in Leeds in 1858, he exhibited colour photos, some on paper, others on cambric.
