March 3rd 1897 John Souter lived at Stronchavie between
Kirkmichael and Pitlochry and was a cattle drover. He had
attended a stock sale at Moulin that day and in the evening he
left to walk the seven miles back to his home. A severe
snowstorm was blowing and about four miles from Pitlochry Mr
Souter collapsed in the snow. He was discovered by a roadman the
next day. Beside the road where he was found is a stone
inscribed with the following message. 'In memory of John
Souter who perished here in a snowstorm. March 3rd. 1887
Erected by a few friends.' |

Last Tue 16 Feb 2016 the Grasmere to Keswick shuttle bus
started running as they have now surface the old section of A591
to pass the re-construction works after the Dec 2015 flood
damage. I wanted to try the shuttle bus so drove to Grasmere and
parked the car in the long layby outside the village and walked
in to the village to the bus stop. |

I love finding out new stuff, this time thanks to the ‘Chorley
Then and Now Facebook’ pages. I was at Southlands School,
Chorley the same time as Judith Cheetham. She was in the school
production of The Wizard of Oz and was a great singer. She went
on to fame as Karen Kay and had her own TV show in the 1980s,
that much I knew. What I didn't know was that her son is Jay
Kay, lead singer of Jamiroquai.

First thing drove via M6 to the village
of Wetheral to the east of Carlisle. I walked past the village
green and its cross to the
Wetheral Priory Gatehouse. It was part of the former
Wetheral priory, a house of the Benedictine order founded in
1106. The current gatehouse dates from the 14th century. The
priory was dissolved in 1538 and then fell into ruins.

1816 view of the cells from across the River Eden |
I continued along the lane then a muddy path into the woods and
down towards the River Eden and Constantine’s Cells. They are
three chambers cut into the sandstone cliff. They are Grade 1
listed structures, English Heritage Building ID: 77778 and
described as Cave dwellings. Early medieval, known to have been
in use in the 14th century, probably for the Priory of Wetheral.
I returned back along the path and down to the River Eden bank.
The Dec 2015 flood damage was evident especially looking across
to Corby Castle riverside grounds.
I continued up past
the church and up the 99 steps to Wetheral Railway Station and
over the Railway Viaduct by the path bridge attached to the rail
bridge which was constructed 1830-34. The architect was
Francis Giles and it was briefly the larges railway bridge in
the World. The attached footbridge was added in 1851 because so
many people were trespassing on the trackbed, in order to cross.
Initially, a half-penny toll, each way, was charged (except for
those going to church), having risen to a penny by the time the
station closed in 1956 (train services resumed in 1981). The
crossing is now free! |

After walking over the moors near Brough, Cumbria I took this
picture of the old Punchbowl Inn. It use to be on the main road
but when the new route of the A66 went through it was consigned
to a cul-de-sac and eventually ceased to be an inn. |
