This morning I joined members of Wigan Archaeological Society for a conducted tour of the Egyptian section of Bolton Museum. Our guide was Ian Trumble, Bolton Museum's Collection Access Officer and also a member of the Wigan Society. The large number of Egyptian artefacts is astonishing with over 2,000 items of display and around 12,000 in total. The museum also has the largest textile collection in the world.

Copy cast of the Nefertiti bust (now in Berlin)
The Rosetta Stone copy was fascinating as it illustrated how the key was found to the Ancient Egyptian language.
In 1799 Napoleon's troops discovered the Rosetta Stone in the Nile Delta near the ancient town of Rosetta. The original is in the British Museum but Bolton has this copy. The stone contains three scripts; Hieroglyphs, Demotic and Greek. Comparing them to known scripts they provided the key to decipher the Ancient Egyptian language.

On display is a well preserved male mummy which was donated to the museum in the 1930s by a wealthy local woman. Apparently she had previously had it propped up on display in one of her rooms.

11am walked to the Whittle-le-Woods Village Hall to judge the photography section of the Flower, Craft & Vegetable Show. The photography entries were the lowest I can remember.
We were fortunate to have a warm sunny day for the 14th Whittle-le-Woods Flower, Craft & Vegetable Show in the Whittle-le-Woods Village Hall. The true number is 20 shows as the first 6 were in the Scout Hut before the Village Hall was converted. It was good to see so many come along in the afternoon and a huge thanks to the organisers and entrants. Eric Bell won the overall exhibit and was awarded the Parish Council Trophy.

Along the Irwell Valley is the line of the old railway between Rawtenstall and Bacup. It closed in 1966. One of the tunnels has recently had a path built through it. It was the first tunnel in 2 parts built in 1851 and a second, longer tunnel added in 1881. The second tunnel remains bricked up.

William Gladstone M.P (1809-1898) woven in silk. His carer lasted over 60 years and 12 years were served as Prime Minister. His image and name were used to advertise Tried, Trusted, True. Not many politicians today can lives up to that.

A cycle ride to Hutton to Police training centre to ask about bath (used in Beck Ruxton murders) used as horse trough. Man on gate said it used to be at Mounted Division Lindle lane. Cycled there and saw lady in office who showed me where it used to be and has now been moved to Police Museum Lancaster Castle.

Driving through Newtonmore I stopped at the Highland Folk Museum. I'm glad I did because it was excellent and so much to see I only saw a fraction. The re-created old township was very impressive, even with an indoor peat fire burning.

Ladies waulking the cloth at the Highland Folk Museum, Newtonmore, Scotland.0 Waulking is the technique of finishing newly-woven tweed by soaking it and thumping it rhythmically to shrink and soften it - all done by hand in the old days. The songs served to keep the rhythm and lighten the work.

Had an enjoyable evening with Chorley Photographic Society on a photo outing to Clitheroe and Holmes Mill. The former textile mill has been converted to a bar restaurant and all sorts of other stuff. One of the most interesting features is the steam engine for the mill which had been incorporated into the bar.
Holmes Mill
It is a Clayton and Goodfellow Cross-Compound Horizontal Engine built in 1910. We also visited Clitheroe Castle with views of Pendle Hill.

Out for a pleasant evening walk along the Leeds & Liverpool Canal at Johnson's Hillock Locks. I saw the interesting weather vane by Town Lane Bridge and a camouflaged camp on the old Lancaster branch of the canal
