Samuel Crompton (1753 – 1827) was an English inventor and pioneer of the spinning industry. Hhe invented the spinning mule, a machine that revolutionised the industry worldwide.
He was born in 10 Firwood Fold, Bolton, Lancashire to George and Betty Crompton (née Elizabeth Holt of Turton).

POCKET WATCH
This watch was made by George Hodson of Bolton and was purchased for five guineas by Samuel Crompton in about 1780. He had earned this money through selling the first amounts of the fine cotton spun on his Mule. In 1827, on his deathbed, Samuel Crompton gave this watch to his son, James.

This 'Witness' 35mm camera was designed by a firm set up in Bolton by two German Jews who had fled the Nazis in the 1930s. In April 1953 it was on sale for £112.12s.6d. A commercial failure, only 350 are thought to have been made.

The River Lostock flows through Whittle-le-Woods on its way to Croston where it joins the River Yarrow. The water soon joins the River Douglas and on to the Ribble Estuary and Irish Sea. In 1803 another waterway arrived at a higher level, the Lancaster Canal (south). The canal in the area was engineered by John Jennie and connected Liverpool with Walton Summit where a horse drawn tramway carried goods between Walton Summit and Preston to connect to the north section of the canal. The Whittle length was mostly redundant from the 1860s with the arrival of the railways and filled in when the M61 was built through the area in 1969. The aqueduct that carried the canal over the River Lostock still exists and fortunately has a footpath through it to make an interesting walk. I enjoyed a wander thought today and stopped to admire the stonework that is now over 219 years old!

53 years ago I wrote about a special weekend in my diary. On Sun 20th July 1969 I listened to the Apollo 11 moon landing and stayed up through the night watching TV and the first moon-walk by Neil Armstrong on Mon 21 July 1969. The crew were Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins & Buzz Aldrin. Between 1969 and 1972 there were six crewed missions to the moon and a total of 12 astronauts landed. The last mission was 14 Dec 1972 with Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt on Apollo 17 walking on the moon. It is interesting to note that Harrison Schmitt was (with Gene Cernan) the last man on the moon and the first scientist (geologist).

Tom Simpson.
Remembering Tom Simpson (1937 - 13 July 1967) who died 55 years ago today. He was Britain’s first World Champion Cyclist and died in the Tour de France while climbing Mont Ventoux, the thirteenth stage on 13 July 1967.
Tom is buried in Harworth Cemetery, Nottinghamshire. An estimated 5,000 mourners attended the funeral including Peugeot teammate Eddy Merckx, the only continental rider there.

Lots of activity in Whittle-le-Woods this morning. There is smoke over the Clayton Hall Landfill & Fire & Rescue are setting up to pump water out of the River Lostock on Factory Ln. Set off early to drive home. Over A9 Drumochter Pass stopped at layby to see Wade’s Stone as shown on Google maps. It wasn't there. I did another search and found out Google is wrong and it is at the layby further north. As I was on a dual carriageway I had a long drive to go back to find the stone deep in ferns a short way from the layby.

Sun 10 Jul 2022

Did final loading of the car and set off to drive north around 07:30
An easy drive north via M6, M74, M80, A9 to Perth to get fuel then on to Aberfeldy and Schiehallion Road. Drove down the access drive to Tullochroisk farm where I met Finlay who asked me to park by the bridge and gate. I left my car and walked with rucksack back up the drive to the Schiehallion Road then across open land to Allt Leathan (Broad Burn) to the ruined shieling at the base of the climb. I climbed steadily upwards due south to around the 650m contour then headed for the 1774 Observatory site use by Rev Nevil Maskelyne the Astronomer Royal, while he made observations to measure the mass of the Earth. I’d carried my Hilleberg tent and set up camp around 5pm. The weather was warm and sunny with clear excellent views. I was surprised to be able to see Ben Nevis 1,345m (4,4413ft) high & 58km (34miles) away.

My tent pitched on the north observatory site.

Just to the right of the rent is Ben Nevis 58km (35mils) away

It was still light at 22:20.
