59 years ago today was Fri 22nd Nov 1963. In the evening it was cold and dark. I was a schoolboy at the time and something would soon happen that I would remember for the rest of my life. In Dallas,Texas it was 12:31 and President John Kennedy (29 May 1917 - 22 Nov 1963) had just been shot & assassinated. It was 18:31 London time.
All the top TV broadcasters were on their way to a Ball at the Dorchester, London. Telstar was the only telecoms satellite but it was out of range. The New York - Washington - London landline for quality speech communications has been closed for the day.

President John F. Kennedy
(29 May 1917 - 22 Nov 1963)
At 18:42 London time the ticker tape machine burst into life stating ‘President Kennedy had been shot’. Just before 19:00 Manchester's Granada TV was the first to broadcast the news. We didn’t yet know that the President was dead. I sat in front of our TV in stunned silence. All the newsreaders were at the ‘do’ at the Dorchester so an unknown assistant in the studio later came on to say “We regret to announce that President Kennedy is dead”. For a while nothing was broadcast until 19:45 when they got through to the Dorchester where the Director of Television decided to return to the normal Friday night schedule. We then had an episode of ‘Here's Harry’ a sitcom featuring the inept ditherer Harry Worth. Then came an episode of the Scottish serial ‘Dr Finlay’s Casebook’. I still sat there wondering why they were broadcasting a humorous sitcom when the President was dead. In the UK there were only two TV channels and things were just as bad on ITV. They broadcast the game show ‘Take Your Pick’ and then the hospital soap ‘Emergency Ward 10’. How times have changed?

Today’s Remembrance Sunday events began at St John’s School, Whittle-le-Woods then to the Whittle & Clayton-le-Woods War Memorial. It was attended by over 150 people who turned up to pay their respects. Afterwards there were teas in St John’s Church. It was the first time I’ve sung the national anthem to our new King Charles III.

The Fortigall Yew. In 1769 it had a circumference of 17m (56ft). There are small post markers showing the original girth. Unfortunately it attracted souvenir hunters who removed large sections and children lit fires inside the hollow trunk and even funeral processions passed through its midst. Two relic trunks of the ancient yew remain and the roots coil back about around 5,000years.

During the first part of today's walk I visited Langden Intale near Dunsop Bridge. I took some photos of Miranda, the Water Nymph. It was made cast in reinforced concrete by George Aldersley who was a senior engineer at Preston & District Water Board when I started in 1965.
