Overnight the clocks went back and we are now on GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). The need for a standard time across the country came with the railways and fast travel. Before that towns only needed their local time (solar time) and each degree of longitude represented 4 minutes. If you were in Penzance your local time would be 22minutes earlier than London. In Nov 1840 the Great Western Railway standardised its timetables to London Time (GMT). By 1847 all railway timetables were on London time and by 1855 all public clocks were set to Greenwich Mean Time. On 2nd August 1880 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was adopted officially by the UK Parliament.

Daylight Saving or British Summer Time (changing the clocks by an hour) wasn’t introduced until 1916. The Summer Time Act was passed in the UK on 17th May 1916. The clocks went forward one hour on the following Sunday 21st May 1916 then returned to GMT by putting the clocks back one hour on Sun 1st October 1916.

Cycled to the former offices of Preston & District Water Board, 9-15 Ribbleton Ln., Preston. It's where I started work on Mon 2rd May 1965. The premises are now W_ORKSPACE - THE WATERMARK - Preston Business Centre. It was interesting seeing how the reception area has changed. The 1965 black marble wall map was moved to the United Utilities Depot at White Bull, Alston near Longridge. The offices were originally opened in March 1965

THE BLACK WATCH MEMORIAL
The Regiment The "Highland Watch” (or simply "The Watch") was established following the issuing of commissions from King Charles II in 1667 for certain clan chlefs to raise Independent Companies to be a constant guard for securing the peace in the Highlands and to 'watch upon the braos. The dark tartans worn by the men of these companies to distinguish them from the "Red Soldiers" led to them being known as "Freiceadan Dobh" or "The Black Watch."

These companies were disbanded in 1717 and started up again in 1725. Starting out as the 43rd Regiment of the Line, it became the 42nd Highland régiment in 1749 on the reduction of the original 42nd regiment. In 1970 the Regiment was given the freedom of the Burgh of Aberfeldy.
THE MONUMENT The Black Watch Memorial was unveiled on the 14th November 1887 by Gavin = Marquis of Breadalbane. It should have been set up on the actual site of the original “muster in 1740 on the opposite side of the river However, that area is subject to flooding and the nearest practicable site was chosen instead. The Monument - depicting a soldier wearing the old regimental uniform cost about £500 (raised by public subscription). In 1910 lightning split the structure from top to bottom. The repairs and installation of a lightning conductor cost £200.

I'm in Scotland and have just completed a leisurely wander to visit McGregor's Cave east of Kinloch Rannoch. The structure is a man-made stone bothy built as a walled enclosure by a low cliff face.
The kettle was a group outside the cave having a picnic.
