Cycling over Belmont this morning and saw firecrews tackling a huge blaze over Darwen Moors. They were pumping water 3km from Belmont Reservoir. Good job we have teams like this to react so quickly. They’d been at it all night.

Once upon a time there was a British Empire and today (24th May) used to be ‘Empire Day’

After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 the first ‘Empire Day’ was held on 24 May 1902. The 24th May was chosen as it was the Queens birthday. In 1958 it was renamed as British Commonwealth Day.

Children would recall the chant Remember, Remember Empire Day, the 24th of May.

In 1958 Empire Day was renamed as British Commonwealth Day, and still later in 1966 it became known as Commonwealth Day. The date of Commonwealth Day was changed to 10th June, the official birthday of the present Queen Elizabeth II.Though it is a now largely forgotten anniversary I thought I’d mention it as it is part of our history.

Evening walk via the canal to Dark Lane and Spring Mews by Heys Lodge (the former Howard Arms). Took some photos of the well by the Spring Mews houses. The water was the original spring used by the Brewery that used to stand on the site.

Great fun digitising some old slides this morning. This view of Rannoch Moor was taken on 35mm Kodachrome while on a backpacking walk along the West Highland Way in March 1982.

Cycled to Pleasington Crematorium and said happy birthday to Mum at plot H1. On the ride home had a look at the boundary stone between Leyland Hundred / Blackburn Hundred. Then a look at the Ordnance Survey bench mark on the Toll Bar house.

I put a couple of photos of a ceramic disc with Whittle Springs Noted Ales on Facebook to see if anyone knew what it was. Apparently it was a match holder, hence the serrated edge.
