After a dismal day of mist and rain the weather eventually cleared. I went for an evening wander through Whittle-le-Woods to enjoy the various Christmas lights.

This evening I was out for a bike ride through the lanes when I was pleased to see the Christmas lights on the tree at Horrobin Farm, Riley Green, Hoghton.

The Whittle-le-Woods Christmas Tree is now up on Waterhouse Green by the Roebuck (Sat 28th Nov 2020). After a great team effort the tree was up by 08:30am. Big thanks to our local supplier Carvers trees of Clayton-le-Woods. The lights will go on next Tue 01st Dec.
Pulling the tree into place.

The tree is now verical.
I used my ‘Old Farts’ bus pass to get me to Clayton Green on the A6 to check out the impressive Clayton-le-Woods Christmas Tree. It's a huge shame that the plague has prevented the usual ceremony of switching on the lights. Santa must be gutted. Let's be positive, it looks amazing.

I walked home and photographed the Whittle-le-Woods tree without its lights.

During a lunchtime wander (Mon 23rd Nov 2020) above White Coppice I visited some historical sites and evidence of the hardy people who lived there. The first was an old ‘slop stone’ by one of the ruins. This is where the washing was done well over 120years ago. Near the ruin was an old cheese-press stone that also had another use. In the front face can be seen the arrow shape of an Ordnance Survey ‘pivot’ benchmark.

At Heapey Moor Farm ruins someone had build a stone enclosure with entrance gap at the north. Some stones had strange markings.

Drove to Adlington for 2pm to see Audrey Kay, widow of William Kay (Bill Kay) he died 10th Nov 2016 at the age of 80. I called to see him on 1 July 2005 to talk about his time working at the TV transmitter mast on Winter Hill.

Last night walked to Drinkwaters ruins to camp for the night. A difficult pitch as strong winds and heavy rain.

Today is Armistice Day which originally took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning, the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918 & the cessation of hostilities. This morning (Wed 11th Nov 2020) I called at the Whittle & Clayton-le-Woods War Memorial to spend a few moments remembering the sacrifice many made for us. Today is also the 100th anniversary of the burial of ‘The Unknown Warrior’ in Westminster Abbey. An unidentified British soldier who was killed on a European battlefield during the First World War was brought home for re-burial in the Abbey on 11th Nov 1920.

The photo was taken before the Great War (WWI) as many of the lads in the photo were killed in action. The team re-formed around 1920 but didn’t have enough runners left to continue.
