Enjoyed a walk over Holcombe Moor to visit the Pilgrims Cross
then Ellen Strange Memorial then Robin Hood's Well.
Site of Pilgrim's Cross.
“This memorial stone was placed here May 24th 1902 by the
copyholders of the manor and others”.
“Nothing is known of the removal of the ancient cross, but its
massive socketed foundation remained here until August 1901”
“On this site stood the ancient Pilgrims Cross. It was standing
in A.D. 1176 and probably much earlier. Pilgrims to Whalley
Abbey prayed and rested here.”
“In A.D. 1176 and in A.D. 1225 the Pilgrims Cross is named in
charters of gifts of land in Holcombe forest. In A.D. 1662 King
Charles II gave this manor to General Monk, Duke of Abermarle
through whom it has descended to the present lord of the manor.”

This lunchtime I welcomed the return of Joe Breen’s bench to
Carwood Lane, Whittle-le-Woods with a sit down and some butties.
Last year the original bench, made by the late Joe Breen decades
ago, finally gave up when the side supports rotted. Fortunately
John Wood was able to replace the collapsed parts and preserve
those that could be rescued. Joe’s original trademark carved
clog has been saved. Big thanks to John for his careful
restoration and also Peter and Barbara for refitting the bench.

At 8:15pm this evening there was an amazing turn out of a
variety of vehicles of all types, ages and sizes as a fond
tribute to Mark Squires (1962-2020) whose funeral was last
Monday 3rd Aug. it was a fitting tribute to Mark who was well
known and respected by many. The 56 vehicle convoy, mostly
tractors, left the Malthouse, Whittle-le-Woods and headed off
towards the Red Cat, Hoghton Arms and around the area where Mark
spent a lot of his working life.

Late morning out on bike ride to Leyland to photograph the
Leyland Clock on Hough Lane Churchill Way junction. There used
to be several Leyland Clocks around the country but the exact
number isn’t known. It was probably around 9 or 10. This is
the Centenary Clock and a replica of the Shap Clock which was
built as a show piece for the 'Leyland 100' celebrations on 2nd
June 1996. The clock face and mechanism were salvaged from the
Cherhill Clock from the A4 Wiltshire and the manually wound
mechanism was converted to an electrical movement.
Centenary Clock.
A replica tower and clock support frame was developed from
detailed sketches taken from surviving clocks. I vaguely
remember the original clock south of Shap on the A6. The
location was chosen to mark the half-way point between Lands End
and John O’Groats. It was removed in 1970 after the inner clock
mechanism was stolen then kept in storage in Kendal until it was
re-erected in the yard of Kendal Arts Centre.

The footpath through the woods by Annecy Drive off Back Lane,
Clayton-le-Woods is being upgraded and extended. It is now
possible to walk all the way through from Back Lane to Preston
Rd (A6) across from Whittle-le-Woods Methodist Church. At the
northern end is the memorial bench to my great friend Rosemary
Boyd.

The inscription reads: To commemorate the life of
